Uptime 2022 year in review
We launched Uptime in April of 2022 with the goal of giving merchants peace of mind by proactively alerting them of issues on their online store.
We’ve come a long way over the last 9 months, and Uptime has now been used by hundreds of merchants and saved tens of thousands of dollars in potential lost revenue.
Here’s a recap of Uptime’s first 9 months on the Shopify App Store:
Overall

We had an incredible first 9 months where we had the opportunity to work with some of our favorite merchants on the Shopify platform.
Overall the feedback from the community has been amazing, with over 100 installs in the last 9 months, with 90% of those being Shopify Plus merchants. Our customers have also let us know how much they love Uptime with a 5-star rating on the Shopify App Store.
We were also hard at work this year listening to our community to build and release some of our most requested features. Here's a small sample of what we released in Uptime this past year:
- Third party app monitoring
- Weekly summary email
- Support for headless stores
- Slack alerts
- Test flow screenshots
- Shopify outage history
When Uptime pinged us that it was having issues, we were able to diagnose what was happening and contact the needed parties to get a quick fix. We launch a lot of sales and promotions at once and just don’t have the time to check every single feature and functionality every day during our “Scaling season". Uptime gives us peace of mind knowing that a good chunk of our QA can be automated and can detect when we have issues quickly so we can respond and mitigate quickly.

Shopify downtime

As we mentioned in our hidden costs of eCommerce downtime blog post, eCommerce platforms like Shopify maintain high levels of availability, and in comparison to issues caused by theme updates (which you'll see below we detected 32K issues this year), Shopify downtime is something you should worry about the least. It's also important to note that not all Shopify downtime events impact all merchants, as these events are often localized.
Throughout the year we saw a total of 96 Shopify downtime events – that's about 10 downtime events every month. Of these events, about 36% of them were related to the Shopify Admin.
Since Uptime monitors the Shopify status page in realtime, we kept merchants in the loop by checking for Shopify platform downtime more than 400K times!
The Shopify Cart API outage had a huge effect on us. Customers were unable to add any products to their cart and we were unaware of the issue. Uptime was able to catch the cart issue and notify our team so that we could look for a resolution right away. While Shopify support insisted that the issue was related to our theme, uptime helped us identify that it was indeed a Shopify error. They gave us the confidence to continue to push Shopify's support team until they came to the same conclusion. Having uptime on our site gives us the peace of mind and confidence needed at all hours of the day.
– Yanal, Founder @ The Peace Collective

Out of all 8 services Shopify tracks on their status page, the top 3 services with downtime in 2022 were Admin, Checkout, and Storefront.

Third party app outages

Uptime allows merchants to monitor the status pages of some of the most used third party apps on the Shopify App Store.
Since launching third party app monitoring in September of 2022, Uptime has notified merchants about over 100 outages. If you combined the duration of all third party app outages it would total over 1.5K hours, with the longest outage of the year being a total of 5 days!

Klaviyo takes the prize as the #1 tracked app by Uptime customers, with over 77% of merchants subscribed to Klaviyo outage updates.
We've been using Uptime for the past few months - it's extremely easy to setup the automated tests, and the ability to receive alerts as soon as there's an issue with the site, Shopify platform, or 3rd party apps, is invaluable (most of the alerts come through before the app or platform themselves notify us!). We'd pay the money just for the alerts to be honest! I can't recommend this app highly enough.

Automated test flows

This year merchants created over 1,000 automated test flows with Uptime. These tests ran a total of 187,000 times, saving merchants over 3,000 hours of manual testing – that's enough time to watch the entire Game of Thrones series 42 times, or learn 6 languages!
We had a problem Uptime caught on our Collections page where customers couldnt add to cart. I immediately set up a redirect to a different landing page and saved thousands of dollars in lost revenue. Wouldnt have known about it without Uptime emailing me!

We also detected over 32K test failures, helping merchants discover issues on their online and saving them thousands of dollars in lost potential sales. In fact, from the savings recovered from just one issue detected by Uptime, Uproot was able to cover the cost of their Uptime subscription for the next 3 years.
